Parent-to-Parent Training

After years of supporting families, the Down Syndrome Network of Northern Nevada, Nevada Center for Excellence in Disabilities, and Family Ties of Nevada understand that peer support is extremely important when a new family receives a diagnosis that their child has a disability. Which is why we are happy to announce Parent to Parent training.

Gain the skills needed to be there for new parents. When parents of children with disabilities are asked who can best support them emotionally, they most often mention other parents who share their experiences. Any parent who has received a diagnosis that their child has a disability knows how difficult the news can be. Your wisdom and experience will be invaluable to another parent in need of advice and support.

Through our First Call program parents/caregivers are given the opportunity to connect one-to-one with a veteran parent/caregiver of a child with a disability. Become part of our statewide network of trained volunteer support parents.

Check here or here for updates about when our next Parent-to-Parent training will be!

Support parents can be helpful to:
  • The parent whose child has just been diagnosed
  •   The parent who needs a friend who lives in a similar world
  •   The parent who could use the in sight of a "veteran" in trying to navigate the network of community resources available
  •   The parent who has run into a difficult situation and needs the wisdom of someone who has "been there"

This training will give you the skills you need for active listening and supporting new parents.
